You would think that this would be the most important issue you should consider for carpet pads, but it isn’t. The right thickness for the right area is essential. In high traffic areas, the higher density isn’t exactly what you want. You want to choose a 1/4-inch carpet pad for then. Lower traffic areas will take up to a 1/2-inch carpet pad.


Be aware of density for people who don’t walk well, like seniors or people with movement impairments. Thick, squishy carpet and padding can become a trip-hazard for such people. And wheel chairs are harder to move and wheel across such floors too.
