Choosing A Vacuum Cleaner For Berber Carpets
Which Berber carpet vacuum you want to buy is partially dependent on which Berber carpeting you buy. The irony of Berber carpets is that the cheaper the carpeting the more critical it is to clean it frequently. The more expensive the Berber carpeting, the more vital it is to protect your investment, so again frequent vacuuming is important. Selecting the proper vacuum for your Berber carpet is important so that you don't snag a loop and unravel the carpeting. Ask your Berber carpet professional what they suggest, and then act promptly so you can get into the habit of caring for your new investment by using the proper Berber carpet vacuum.
Berber carpet is one of the most popular carpeting choices today. Its classic beauty and ease of care makes it a sound choice for most families. If you don't like the look of footprints or vacuum tracks on your carpet, Berber carpet may be for you because tracks hide fairly well. There are several recommended Berber carpet vacuum cleaners that help keep the loops from being crushed down or pulled too.
What exactly is Berber carpet? Berber carpet is named after an African tribe's handmade wool floor covering that was described as being made from short looped yarn with flecks of color running through it. Berber carpeting that is available now is much the same look except that there are different kinds of Berber carpet. Berber carpet now comes in multi-level loops and cut loop varieties, which can give the carpeting a completely different look from casual to formal. The randomness of the loops of Berber carpet also helps to hide stains and dirt.
The loops of Berber carpet also offer a natural cushiony surface for you to walk on as well as acting as a natural insulator to help regulate the temperature in your room. The loops can be flattened or pulled, however, if you do not take care of them correctly. Finding the best vacuum cleaner for Berber carpets is essential so that your Berber carpet loops stay looped and don't get flattened. Check with your Berber carpet manufacturer or distributor to see which vacuum cleaner that they recommend or research your choices to help you choose one.
The main thing to remember is that a vacuum cleaner that uses an aggressively moving revolving brush can damage your Berber carpets. Many Berber carpet manufacturers recommend that you do not use a revolving brush vacuum cleaner at all on Berber carpets. Check with your manufacturer to see what they recommend.
Berber carpet is an investment that you should take precautions with. With proper care and maintenance, your Berber carpet will last for many years. Regular vacuuming helps keep the carpeting clean and helps to keep the dirt from being ground into the carpet, which will make it more difficult to clean. The need to clean your Berber carpeting is why it is so important to ask questions about which Berber carpet vacuum cleaner will work best for you because it can help your carpets to last longer.
A quality Berber carpet will hold up better during vacuuming than an inferior Berber will. Don't buy the cheapest carpeting you can find or you may be replacing it quicker than you would otherwise. If you spend a few more dollars on higher quality carpeting, you'll be able to enjoy it for years. Wool or nylon Berber is what you need to purchase, rather than other kinds of Berber carpet, to achieve longevity with your carpeting. Research your choices to make sure that you get the maximum value for your investment.
The best vacuum for Berber carpets is the one that does not flatten or pull the loops of the carpeting. Ask your carpet distributor, installer, or manufacturer which vacuum cleaner that they recommend or check their websites for assistance. With proper care and maintenance, your Berber carpet will last for many years.

Just had burber carpeting installed. It shows every step we take on it. Will this always happen? Am I using the wrong kind of vacuum? I have only had the carpet 3 days.
Georgia at April 14, 2008 1:05 PMI can't tell if it's the padding below that's the problem or the carpet loops themselves. Are the loops getting flattened or is the padding keeping the foot imprint? I can't believe the vacuum is the problem, but don't know enough to say.
The Flooring Lady at April 16, 2008 6:34 AMThe vacuum is not getting the pet hair up from my berber. Pet hair just seems to stick to it. I am constantly pulling up pet hair by hand. Any suggestions?
Susan at July 15, 2008 2:42 PMHi Susan,
It sounds like you might not have the correct type of sweeper for you carpet. I'm copying/pasting from the article above: "Ask your carpet distributor, installer, or manufacturer which vacuum cleaner that they recommend or check their websites for assistance."
Don't sweat it though, unless you want to buy a new sweeper! I have a cream colored berber in my living room and hallways and I also have a black cat - a lovely combination - NOT. Sometimes I feel that my sweeper doesn't pick up the hair like it should too - especially at the edges where the carpet and walls meet. I just take a broom and gently sweep and the hair just seems to gather together to where I can pick it up and dispose of it. Sometimes I use just the vacuum hose extension as well with the little narrow opening attachment.
The Flooring Lady at July 15, 2008 9:29 PMI am desperate to know the type of vacuum cleaner to buy for berber carpet. I have a Maine Coon and the vacuum cleaner will not pick up his hair. My carpet was installed by my contractor so I do not have a carpet installer to ask.
Lisa P at September 11, 2008 8:14 PMHi Lisa,
It's recommended to buy a vacuum that doesn't have brushes.......unfortunately, this probably isn't going to clean satisfactorily with the extremely long hairs that Maine Coon cats have.
Does your vac have attachments? Though it'd be a pain in the rear, I'd try using the attachment that looks like a small vac head. It'll take longer to vacuum for sure, but at least it won't damage the Berber.
Were I you, when it's time to go carpet shopping again, I'd choose a different type. Either that or get rid of the cat (which I'm sure is NOT an option!). ;~)
Main Coons are beautiful, I used to have one and loved him very much. I would have chosen him over my carpeting any ol' day!
The Flooring Lady at September 16, 2008 8:07 PMFor berber you need a new kirby sentria, it has a brush made for berber. and also resets nap on pilecut. it is awsome.
john Hanson at February 20, 2009 10:55 AMSo I have a Dyson upright vacuum and I am wondering if I use it on my berber will it wreck my carpet?
Cpody Ostash at April 5, 2009 12:52 PMHi Cpody -
The Flooring Lady at April 5, 2009 1:30 PMI don't know what kind of a Dyson you have. It's recommended to buy a vacuum that doesn't have brushes, though as you can see from the post above yours, apparently Kirby has actually made a brush just for Berber. Must be awfully soft and short. ;~)
How can I get the dog urine stains from my puppy out of my burber carpet I used resolve as soon as I saw her pee on the carpet but the stains will not come up what can I do?
charity at November 5, 2009 6:27 AMCharity,
