Everyone expects their flooring should be added with the feature hardness. In order to measure the hardness of flooring, the scale named hardness scale will be used. It may not be able to measure the entire durability of the material. The scale called wood hardness scale will make you understand about the wood’s ability to resist against scratch. The hardness scale can be divided into two elements called hardest element and softest element. Diamond is used to refer hardest element and talc is used to refer the softest element. Some people may want to know about the history of this hardness scale and for their knowledge; this is initially found by German mineralogist named Friedrich Mohs in 1822. Hence it is named as Moh’s scale. This same method has been used for several years. If the harder mineral has made any scratch to the mineral, then it is named as groove. The softer mineral cannot do any scratch on the softer mineral. That’s why the relative scale got established which can find out the differences between hardness. There is a role for Moh’s scale and it is about measuring the resistance of smooth surface. It is not only used to measure the resistance, but also used to measure about the scratching made by any hard material. That is, it is mainly having responsibility to measure about the abrasion. The Moh’s scale is also called misnomer, because, each mineral will be varying based on the scratch resistance.  Instead of scale, you can also use tables or an ordered list, but the table is not enough to take the complete measurements. For Instance, if you take the hardest element with 10 on hardness scale, it will be 4 times harder than the element which measures out the corundum of 9.

 

Measure Density Of Wood:

 

Due to the fact that the Moh’s hardness scale is just taken as the relative scale and not as absolute scale, the numbers are used to assign each element for reference purpose. There is a wood hardness scale and it is having main role in measuring out the density of wood, but it is not more enough to give the result about the wood that this is the best for using in flooring. It can be taken as a relative measure and it is having major role in helping people in understanding the certain attributes of the wood such as durability and density. The main purpose of Moh’s scale is measuring the hardness of minerals by using scratch method which involves various kinds like indentation, bending, fracture, breaking and abrasion. These are all about the measures of hardness and these are mainly used to give clear knowledge to the people about differences between durability and hardness. For instance, glass is given higher rate for hardness on the Moh’s scale than rubber, but in fact, rubber is harder than the glass. Moh’s scale will list about ten minerals and they are, talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, orthoclase, quartz, topaz, corundum and diamond. These minerals are not much common in most of the homes.

In order to make the Moh’s scale as utilizable, common minerals will be assigned with numbers. Fringernails are given as 2, penny is given as 3, knife blade is given as 5, window glass is given as 5.5 and steel file is given as 6.5. By dividing these common house hold items, the ratings of Moh’s scale will be given context which makes the hardness scale more meaningful and useful. If you buy flooring tiles, you should ensure that they should be ceramic, porcelain and these can be referred as the attributes used to measure about the hardness in Moh’s scale. This number may not be completely enough to give information about durability of flooring tiles and about its ability to hold load. Finally, this Moh’s scale is having its major role in measuring about the hardness but it may not be completely enough and it can be taken as just the reference.
